The NHTSA previously faulted the Monostable gear shifter for its unintuitive operation and lack of tactile feedback, necessitating drivers to look at the shifter to make sure they selected the correct gear. A column stalk shifter is also handy, as per most modern Mercedes, leaving the centre console free for storage space and teenage canoodling. The Monostable gear shifter is present in certain model years of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300. The introduction of shift-by-wire in modern vehicles with automatic transmission is a trend which is now unstoppable. The gear selector in question is different from the one that sparked a recall of a number of FCA vehicles last spring the NHTSA is focusing on the rotary knob version of the gear selector rather than the ZF-made Monostable gear shifter linked to a large number of crashes and injuries. A total of nine injuries have been reported in connection with this issue. It is finished in striking ruthenium and dramatically. The NHTSA has expanded its probe to include 2014-16 Dodge Durango SUVs and 2013- pickups after receiving reports of 25 crashes that have occurred as a result of vehicles rolling away despite owner claims that they had placed their vehicles into park and exited.
